Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books is a competition for students in grades four and five who love to read. The competition resembles a book-based Jeopardy: students read approximately twenty books and become experts on their contents. Selected students read the books from the book list. They meet throughout the first months of school and compete in February with other school teams.

During the competition, students win points for their ability to recall intricate details of the books. It is an exciting opportunity for book-lovers to compete in a fun and competitive environment, and to build friendships with other like-minded students. The purpose is simply to encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with peers.

A Battle of the Books team consists of between six and twelve students who compete against other elementary school teams. During the competition, six team members answer questions about the books they have read to earn points. All answers are the title and author of a particular book. The top two school teams at each cluster competition go on to compete in the County finals.

We discuss summaries of the books as well as clarify any questions you may have with a book. We learn to work as a team by playing games by practicing and competing against each other here at school. Our team will be well prepared for the competition. We work hard, but we have a lot of fun!

Science Olympiad
North Carolina Science Olympiad (NCSO) is a nonprofit organization with the mission to attract and retain the pool of K-12 students entering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees and careers in North Carolina. Every year NCSO hosts tournaments on university, community college, and public school campuses across the state. These tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of different hands-on, interactive, challenging and inquiry-based events that are well balanced between the various disciplines of biology, earth science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, engineering and technology. Our Science Olympiad team is made up of students in grades three, four and five. To prepare for the event, team members work together to build rockets, construct ramps, build egg drop devices, and other fun projects.  The annual countywide competition gives team members the opportunity to compete against students from other schools.
