Professional school counselors are certified/licensed educators with a minimum of a Master’s degree in school counseling making them uniquely qualified to address students’ cognitive, socio-emotional and career development needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program.  They also provide consultation, individual and group counseling, academic advisement.  In addition, they provide prevention, crisis intervention, and conflict resolution.

The EC Case Teacher can address concerns for students eligible for special education services. They can verify service implementation and communicate with the student’s team to meet their academic and functional needs. In addition, she can coordinate Child Find. This is a coordinated effort between the Student Services Team and the Exceptional Children Services to locate and identify children and youth suspected of or diagnosed with a disability who might have intellectual, physical, or emotional disabilities and are unable to benefit from the regular school program without special assistance.
School Social Worker – Emily Parker –coraparker@ccs.k12.nc.us
School Social Workers are trained mental health professionals with a Bachelors or Master’s degree in social work.  They are the link between the home, school and community.  School social workers provide direct as well as indirect services to students, families and school personnel such as monitoring school attendance, promoting dropout prevention, consultation, information and referral, identification of at-risk students, and counseling.  In addition, they provide prevention, crisis intervention, and conflict resolution.
School Psychologist – Katelyn Weiger – katelynweiger@ccs.k12.nc.us
School psychologists are highly trained in both psychology and education, completing a minimum of a specialist-level degree program.  they provide assessment and testing of students for special services.  Consultation for teachers.  Counseling for students.  In addition, they provide prevention, crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and program modification for special learning and/or behavioral needs.
School Nurse – Carolynn Hemric – carolynnhemric@ccs.k12.nc
School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success and life-long achievement and health of students.  School nurses facilitate health services such as immunizations, communicable disease control, vision and hearing screening and follow-up, health assessments and referrals, and health counseling and information for students and families.  School nurses actively collaborate with school personnel, students and parents to create health plans and to administer medication.
CCS Military Family & Youth Liaison – Howard Lattimore
The military family and youth liaison (MFYL) acts as a communication link between the installation and the school district in order to ease the transition for the military students.  The MFYL coordinates and supports efforts to: assess needs, build awareness of resources, and connect those with needs to supportive solutions.

ALDERMAN ROAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GUIDANCE PROGRAM

Alderman Road Elementary has a comprehensive program designed to meet the needs of all students within the diverse population we serve.  The counselor works with all students through classroom guidance lessons each school year. Students participate in age appropriate lessons that focus on personal/social development, career awareness, and academic development.  Guidance lessons emphasize Personal/Social Development with a focus on supporting and maximizing each student’s personal growth and enhancing the educational and career development of the student.

Throughout the year small groups are offered.  Students may join or be referred to these groups to receive counseling in specific areas.  Individual counseling takes place when requested by parents, teachers, administrator, or students. Academic and personal counseling is available to help students meet their special needs. The counselor consults with teachers, parents, and other school personnel to ensure that student needs are met.

· Family transitions (divorce, death, marriage, re-marriage, new sibling, etc.)

What do Elementary School Counselors do?

· Coordinates the development of a comprehensive guidance plan based on the needs of the students, parents/guardians, school staff, and community

· Counsels with students individually and/or in groups to help students understand and appreciate their unique qualities and grow personally and socially

· Coordinates school mentoring program

· Assists students in crisis situations

· Helps to identify individual student needs

· Conducts conferences with parents

· Supports students by teaching skills for achieving success

· Works collaboratively with students, parents/guardians, and teachers to identify and remove barriers that may hinder student achievement

· Helps promote positive attitudes among students towards self, family, and community

· Links students with school and community resources

How can I refer a student to the School Counselor?

  • Parent/Guardian referral
  • Teacher, administrator, or staff referral
  • The school counselor may also meet with a student based on counselor observation.

Parent Involvement is one of the key elements to a successful School Counseling Program.  Parents are the advocates and experts on their own children. They are the ones who know their child best and can tell when something is going wrong in their child’s life. Parents may notice a change in their child’s attitude and behavior at home, a change in their grades, or may simply sense that something isn’t right.  Parents can contact the Guidance Counselor in order to obtain counseling such as individual or group or to refer their child to Student Services in order to address their academic needs or other concerns.

 

MissionStatement:

As Guidance Counselor, my mission is to prepare students socially, academically and emotionally for present and future challenges through a safe and caring environment.  I strive to accomplish this mission by providing a planned, purposeful and sequential program of activities that begins in kindergarten and continues through fifth grade.  The program is data driven by student needs and provides outcome based accountability measures.  This aligns the counseling program with the school’s overall academic mission.  I work collaboratively with students, educators, parents and community members to empower students to reach their highest potential.

Program Goal:

The goal of the Counseling and Guidance Program is to promote the development of the fundamental skills of self-concept and healthy interpersonal relationships.  It emphasizes decision-making, self-awareness, and the exploration of future career and educational options.
