Dear Parent/Guardian:

We are looking forward to an awesome 2020-2021 school year at Alderman Road Elementary School.  This will be a very exciting and fulfilling year full of rigorous instruction and high academic achievement.

The first 6 weeks of school (August 17 until September 25) will be online and your child is expected to join his/her teacher for daily online instruction.  Listed below are some details regarding this year’s remote learning experience:

  • Daily Learning Schedule: A daily learning schedule has been established for elementary, middle and high schools, which includes LIVE learning time with teachers, independent work time for students, student breaks to manage attention span, and time to visit the district’s meal sites for lunch.  Your child’s daily learning schedule will be shared with you.

  • Canvas Learning Management System: The online district-wide learning management system for student instruction will provide interactive learning, align assignments, house lecture recordings, quizzes/exams, and provide online grading.

  • Grading: The district will use a uniform grading structure that aligns with Board policy and assures that student assignments, quizzes and assessments are balanced and provide quality feedback. Grades for students in grades 3 – 12 will be recorded in Canvas, which aligns to the PowerSchool Grading System that can be readily accessed by parents and students.

  • Services for Special Populations: Academically/Intellectually Gifted, English As A Second Language, Exceptional Children and Pre-Kindergarten services will be provided throughout the remote-learning experience.

*** It is very important that we have your most updated phone number on file!

If you have any questions please feel free to call the school at (910) 321-0398.

More information can be found on our school’s website: http://ares.ccs.k12.nc.us  and on the Cumberland County Schools website at: www.ccs.12.nc.us.

Respectfully,

Tim Gardner

Principal

Good evening ARES families and friends, we miss all of you.  I hope everyone is staying safe and following the recommendations so we can defeat this virus and get back to school.  We are entering phase 2 of Cumberland @home.  There is a lot of information on the CCS website pertaining to how instruction will be delivered over the next several weeks.  I encourage you to monitor the website for updated information.  We will also post helpful hints on the ARES website on how to log into different online learning platforms.  I want to share a few important things that are happening this week as we move into phase 2 of Cumberland @ home.  We will be distributing learning packets for Pre-K – 2nd grade students this Tuesday Mar. 31st from 1:00 to 3:00 and on Wednesday, Apr. 1st from 3:00 to 6:00.  We will also sign out computers to  3rd through 5th graders who have indicated through the CCS survey or your teacher that you need to borrow a computer.  Those students who have indicated they need a computer will receive a separate call with more information about how to sign out a computer.  We have limited computers that we can sign out so we ask that only those students who need a computer in order to complete their online learning to sign out a computer from the school.  If you know of anyone who is not receiving these calls, please share this information with them.  If the person has opted out of receiving calls, they can opt back in by calling 1-855-502-7867 and press Option 2.  They need to call using the phone number they would like to be called on.  I am sorry for this long message but there is a lot of information to share with you as we continue to find ways to improve the Cumberland @Home learning experience for our students.  Our prayers are with you, your family, our community and nation.  We miss and love all of you.

Melanie Grooms-Garrett

Congratulations to our very own Melanie Grooms-Garrett for being inducted into the Fayetteville Sports Club Hall of Fame. Melanie was a standout at South View High School being called one of the best athletes in the schools history. She was named athlete of the year in volleyball, basketball and softball her senior year. She continued excelling in sports at UNC Pembroke being the only player in the schools history to be named NAIA All American in volleyball as well as being named all-league performer in softball two times. Melanie was later hired as head coach of the Braves’ volleyball and softball teams. She was also inducted in 2003 to the UNC Pembroke athletic hall of fame. Melanie has been a great addition to our staff, she is great at what she does and the kids love her.  She is always positive and has a smile on her face and we are so proud of her accomplishments!
